The 2009 NFL season has been an interesting one so far, especially in the world of fantasy football. Some players with high expectations have flopped so far, and others who no one expected much of have emerged into must start players every weekend. It’s interesting how it all works, but that’s what we get when it comes to the wild world of pro football. Without further ado, here are a few players who’ve been very pleasant surprises so far through the first part of the season.

1. Pierre Garcon. This Indianapolis Colts wide receiver has turned from a no name to a bona fide wide receiver in a matter of weeks. Much of this has to do with the injury of Anthony Gonzalez, out for the season. Nonetheless, Garcon has been great. So has his teammate, rookie wide receiver Austin Collie.

2. Cedric Benson. So many people doubted Benson and his abilities going into the season. He had never averaged more than 4 yards per carry in his career, so there was good reason to think he couldn’t get it done. Things are different when Carson Palmer’s your QB though. Benson has been great through the first several weeks of the 2009 football season.

3. Matt Schaub. Who would have thought that Matt Schaub would be the second highest fantasy points scorer through the first 5 games of the season, only behind Peyton Manning? Not I, said the fantasy football GM. Schaub has been brilliant and was a steal in all drafts.

The Bowl College System (BCS) determines the college football teams that get to play in the most lucrative of bowls and of course the two teams in the National Championship game. It has been said that a BCS bowl can be worth $17.5 million to the teams that play in it. These bowl games for dollars are keeping college officials happy and stopping talk of a college football playoff system. So, without college football playoffs in sight, colleges are game the system to their benefit.

Boise State, a perennial winner of late, cannot break into and maintain a poll ranking in the top five. The argument is that they do not play any or enough tough games in their schedule. Yet, another perennial winner University of Texas is consistently ranked within the top three when they are undefeated. In the 2009 regular season they only played two ranked teams (none in the top ten). Texas scheduled their non-conference games against Louisiana-Monroe, Wyoming, University of Texas- El Paso (UTEP), and the University of Central Florida. Texas having a long football tradition and playing in the Big Twelve know that all they need to do to get into the National Championship is to not lose. Boise State playing in a weak, non-BCS conference is having hard time scheduling tougher games in the years ahead. Being a winning team, no one wants to play them and risk a unnecessary non-conference lost.

All this is to not knock Texas or promote Boise State, it is to say that it is a sad trend for the top colleges to choose to play weak opponents. This means that great early season match-ups will be a thing of the past.

Another trend to strengthen the trouble in scheduling is the desire for schools to not travel. When top tier football programs can pack a stadium with 80,000 fans regardless of the opponent, then the school wants to schedule as many home games as possible to make money. Plus, there is a cost savings from having to send a team out. No school can have all home games as conference play will require away games, but they can stack non-conference play. Other teams are only scheduling games within a certain radius to save on travel costs, so more intra-state games are arising. Again, this reinforces weaker games for the stronger programs.

Sadly, these two trends mean the strength of games available will only diminish.

More Sports Writing Available

The author has more writing available on college football. Read an article arguing for a college football playoffs system or read about Sam Bradford, Cherokee Heisman winner.

Great Britain VS Australia in American Football, who will win?

Who will win? Any other Countries that play Gridiron? & is there an Internation ranking system for Countries other than the USA that play American Football? 2nd, 3rd, 4th…. Sweeden, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, GB, Australia etc…

http://wspirates.com/

How difficult is it to get into the National Football League? Very. Not everyone is given a chance to compete professionally. Of course, not everyone can wear an NFL jersey – unless, of course, you’re going to buy one.

Get Your Own

Today, you can find all sorts of NFL jerseys for a lot of reasons. First, it’s a marketing technique. Teams can get more exposure and support by selling merchandise items such as jerseys in the market. Second, it’s definitely way cooler and better to be on the bench and be “one with the team” by simply wearing a jersey bearing their logo or name.

Third, its popularity may have been brought about by the mere fact that jerseys are considered to be in style, funky, or hip. If you don’t have a jersey in your closet, you don’t have a complete wardrobe. Hey, even women wear jerseys these days.

The question now then is how you can get your own jersey. There are two simple ways. You can buy them in your local or online shop, or you can customize one.

Of course, it’s a lot easier if you’re just going to directly buy your NFL jersey. Most of the online shops, for example, have already classified these jerseys according to team. You have Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, and Jacksonville Jaguars, to name a few.

You can just click on the link of your favorite team, and the page will give you a catalogue of different jersey designs that you can choose from.

Another option is to scour for jerseys from popular sports apparel brand. These include Nike and Reebok. Go check out their catalogue if they’re offering any jerseys that would capture your fancy. A great example would be Reebok’s Houston Texans jerseys for men.

Before you give up on finding the jersey that you want, it would be best if you can place a call or look into all places first. It could be that a certain online shop is still in the process of designing a jersey that you really want. It could be worth the wait.

Now, just in case you don’t have patience to do so, you can’t find any style you like, or simply like to personalize the apparel, you proceed to customization.

There are several ways on how you can customize your own jersey. However, the most preferred one is to add the name of your favorite player at the back of the shirt. Better yet, you use your name instead. It’s as if you’re really playing together with your favorite team.

You may also change the numbers on your jersey shirt. Perhaps you have a lucky number to speak of. It could also be the jersey number of your football player inspiration.

Another method is changing the size of the jersey. Charts can vary from one store to another, so you definitely need to see it first before you place an order. Common sizes for jersey shirts include small, medium, large, and extra large.

Women have the option of getting non-boxy jerseys or those that follow the contours of their bodies. Moreover, the measurements are based on garment, not body, size.

Jennifer Reyes is an expert author. She has written many articles in various interesting stories about NFL Jerseys. For more information about NFL jersey discount, please contact us.

Football is a fantastic sport…particularly the NFL. It has been my favorite spectator sport since I was a little girl, sitting on my Dad’s lap watching his favorite team play. There is something so great (especially if you have a favorite team) about listening to the thousands of people in the stadium cheer, or sometimes boo, when a touchdown is scored or the defense intercepts the ball. OK, I know if you’re reading this you are probably a girl wanting to know more about the sport, so what I just said may not make much sense to you. But, have no fear! I am here to give you a short guide to football so you can impress your boyfriend, or to have more fun hanging out with your husband on a Sunday afternoon while he’s watching the game.

This knowledge comes from 40 years of watching football, and although I never played (I WAS a cheerleader for many years and that’s as close as we girls can get), I have earned the respect of many a man by knowing my stuff about football. I’m also way more obsessed about my favorite team than most men I know!

#1 – The object of the game is to outscore the opponent by advancing the football into your end zone scoring as many touchdowns as possible. This is done by the OFFENSE. Meanwhile, the DEFENSE tries with all their might to stop the offense from scoring a touchdown.

There are 2 end zones on the playing field – 1 for each team. They are located at each end of the field where the goal posts are located (hopefully no explanation needed here).

A TOUCHDOWN is worth 6 points and is scored when a player catches or carries the ball into their end zone. After scoring a touchdown, an attempt to kick an extra point through the goal posts is made. If successful, it is worth 1 point and makes it a total of 7 points scored in that series.

Another way to score is called a FIELD GOAL. If a team thinks they won’t be able to make it in the end zone for a touchdown (for various reasons), they might attempt to score by kicking a field goal, and it is worth 3 points.

#2. – Stay with me here. Each team has a series of DOWNS in order to get the ball to their end of the field to score. A team has to take the ball 10 yards each time to be able to advance, and they have 4 attempts to do so. For example, the team starts the series with the ball on the 20 yard line. They run the ball for 3 yards and get tackled (see, you’re learning the lingo!). They still have 7 yards to go to make the FIRST DOWN. Let’s say the next play they go 9 yards, this means they not only get a FIRST DOWN, they get to start over with what is called a 1ST AND 10….which means another first down and 10 yards to go to get another 1ST AND 10, and so on. If the team does not make the 10 yards within the 4 attempts, they have to kick the ball to the other team. It’s actually a little more involved then this, but I’m just trying to give you the very basics!

#3 – While the OFFENSE is trying to score a TOUCHDOWN by passing and/or running the ball toward their end zone, the DEFENSE is trying to stop the other team from advancing! This is done by TACKLING the OFFENSIVE players, trying to SACK THE QUARTERBACK, or trying to INTERCEPT the ball while it is being thrown. This is also more complicated than described, but the more you watch the more you’ll catch on!

#4 – In the NFL, a game is made up of 4 QUARTERS. Each QUARTER is 15:00 minutes long (I’m sure you’ll notice that it’s not actually 15 minutes in real-time). It goes like this; 1ST QUARTER, 2ND QUARTER, HALFTIME, 3RD QUARTER and 4TH QUARTER. If, when the game is over and there is a tie, it will go into OVERTIME and the first team to score will win.

Well, this is a very basic and broad description of the game of football. I hope it’s a start toward you feeling comfortable with watching a game! Most of the girls I know that don’t like football, simply have no clue to what the sport is about, much less know any of the facts or lingo. I really feel that if they had a little more knowledge about the game, they might find it exciting to watch…plus a lot of guys think a football-watching girl is a sexy thing!

By the way, if you don’t have a favorite team and want to pick one to “amp” up the whole experience, please don’t pick one based on their colors. That’s way too “girly”!

Here are some of the more pleasant fantasy football surprises of the 2009 season so far. We’re only two weeks into the season, so much is subject to change, but as it stands right now, there are definitely quite a few players exceeding all expectations placed upon them.

Mario Manningham, wide receiver for the New York Giants. Everyone wondered what would become of the Giants’ receiving situation. Having lost both Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer, the Giants entered the season without their longtime top two receivers. At wide receiver, Mario Manningham is amongst the biggest 2009 fantasy football surprises so far, and may very well be the biggest.

Manningham has been superb though. Through the first two games, Manningham has 208 yards and a total of two touchdowns. It’s clear that the Giants are in pretty good hands so far, and Manningham has broken out.

Fred Jackson, running back for the Buffalo Bills. Talk about a great first two games of the season! With 220 rush yards and 108 receiving yards (not to mention a touchdown too), Fred Jackson has one of the highest rushing totals in the NFL through the first two games of the season and is definitely one of the bigger fantasy football surprises of the 2009 season so far.

The versatile running back has done an excellent job filling in for Marshawn Lynch, currently serving a suspension, and one has to wonder what the running back situation will look like in Buffalo once Lynch returns. Without a doubt, Jackson will remain an integral part of the Bills’ offense.

In researching information for this article, the latest data for the presentation of the highest salaries in the NFL is for the 2008 season. It should be noted that this list changes from year to year. Also, the salary cap imposed by the NFL commission increases from year to year. The salary cap is the amount of money an NFL team can spend on salaries for their players per year. The salary cap has progressively increased year by year since its inception back in 1994.

The NFL salary cap, as negotiated by the players Union in the current collective bargaining agreement, is 62.24% of all football related revenue divided by 32 teams. For the 2009 season that figure is 128 million dollars.

The following shows the steady increase in salary cap since 1999:

Salary Cap Per Team for NFL Player Salaries by Year:

2008 $116 million

2007 $109 million

2006 $102 million

2005 $85.5 million

2004 $80.5 million

2003 $75 million

2002 $71 million

2001 $67.5 million

2000 $62.2 million

1999 $58.4 million

As the salary cap increases, so does the salary of players. The real question is how is the money distributed to players. There is a type of salary distribution model that teams use which is not known to the general public. What is known is that the top 20 salaries for 2008 only had a couple of quarterbacks. Yet the highest paid player for 2008 was quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. So who were the highest paid NFL players for 2008. The following table tells it all:

TOP 20 HIGHEST PAID PLAYERS IN 2008

1. QB Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh $ 27,701,920

2. DE Jared Allen, Minnesota $ 21,119,256

3. WR Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona $ 17,103,480

4. QB JaMarcus Russell, Oakland $ 16,872,400

5. RB Michael Turner, Atlanta $ 16,003,840

6. G Chris Snee, N.Y. Giants $ 14,890,000

7. CB Asante Samuel, Philadelphia $ 14,145,000

8. WR Randy Moss, New England $ 14,006,720

9. T Flozell Adams, Dallas $ 14,005,760

10.DT Tommy Kelly, Oakland $ 13,978,480

11. WR Terrell Owens, Dallas $ 13,731,560

12. WR Bernard Berrian, Minnesota $ 13,705,000

13. T Michael Roos, Tennessee $ 13,505,520

14. C Jeff Faine, Tampa Bay $ 13,105,760

15. DE Will Smith, New Orleans $ 12,950,000

16. QB Tony Romo, Dallas $ 12,886,600

17. G Travelle Wharton, Carolina $ 12,850,000

18. DE Antwan Odom, Cincinnati $ 12,800,000

19. CB Terence Newman, Dallas $ 12,611,240

20. RB Marion Barber, Dallas $ 12,522,400

Lets examine the concept of salary in the NFL a little more closely. As previously stated, how teams pay their players and the value they place on them is known by only a few, including the player agent. It is interesting to note that having high salary players does not necessarily mean success to the team.

A case in point. One of the most successful NFL teams over the past ten years has been the New England Patriots. Yet only one player from the Patriots is in the top 20 for 2008. That is wide receiver Randy Moss. Yet Oakland, over the past ten years, which has two players in the top 20, has not seen the success that the Patriots have had. As a matter of fact, they have not even come close.

Also, you can see five players from the Dallas Cowboys in the top 20 list for 2008, yet they have not been in the Super Bowl since 1995 (Super Bowl XXX). It appears that the New England Patriots like to spread their money around to their players, so that one or a few players do not get an enormous salary while the rest of the players make a fraction of that amount. Randy Moss may be an exception to this rule.

This team concept of salary distribution that the Patriots employ falls in line with the team concept they have set for their players when it comes to playing football. The Patriot’s organization believe that it requires a team effort to win football games, and not the superior effort of only a few players. Maybe that is one of the reasons the Patriots have been so successful over the past ten years. And lets not forget that the Patriots is one of the best managed teams in the NFL. Part of that management is proper salary distribution. Team owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick seem to know what they are doing.

In any case, NFL player salaries continue to increase year by year. Today the lowest rookie makes a bare minimum of $285,000.00 (at least for 2007). In terms of all professional sports, the NFL players are the highest paid. This is why so many college players seek to get into the NFL. But it should also be remembered that the average length of a career for a player in the NFL is only 4 years. So obviously a player needs to make all he can during that short career. The question is are the players worth these very high salaries.

A persons salary is dependent on one major factor. That is how many other people can do the job they are doing? The fewer the number of people that can perform a particular job, the higher the salary. Not to many people can play in the NFL. Also, the players do deserve most of the revenue that is produced simply because, without the players, you would not have any business entity. And since fans are willing to pay the high ticket prices, then I would have to answer the question that yes, the players do deserve the salaries they receive.

Football is a form of entertainment, but it is a form of entertainment Americans can not do without. Even in the Roman period, people had a need to see the gladiators fight in the Colosseums. The Romans had to pay to see their gladiators fight to the death. Sometimes all the seats were free, if a rich person had given money to pay for the show. Other times, you had to pay, and it cost more money for the good seats than for the bad seats, so the poor people had to sit way up top in the Colosseum where it was hard to see. Even the Colosseums had their nosebleed seats. The point is, Romans were willing to pay to see the gladiator form of competition. This willingness to pay to see competition has existed throughout the history of mankind.

Every year, fans watch their teams with the hope that their team will reach the Super Bowl, or in some cases, simply end up with a winning season. And in the end, we really do not care to much about a players salary. As long as we enjoy watching our team play, we will continue to pay high ticket prices.

So to conclude, there are really two basic reasons why NFL players can make millions of dollars per year. First and foremost, fans are willing to pay high ticket prices to see their team play. Secondly, not to many people can play in the NFL. This results in a high demand for their skill. Lets face it, not to many people have the skill of a Tom Brady or a Ben Roethlisberger. So as long as the demand for tickets remains high, players will continue to enjoy a high income.

There are different reasons why you may want to design your very own football shirt. It could be because you are the coach of a team, have a child that loves to play the game and wants their own or just because you are a fan and want to represent your team. Whatever your reason is, there are different ways that you can go about getting one of your very own and designing it just the way that you want.

Many fans like to have their very own shirt to wear on the game day to show that they are there for a specific player or just for the team in general. You can pick your own color and add design if you like to and even have your very own name put on the front. If you have a child that has a love for the sport and wants to start their very own team, you can order shirts online or from a specialty store. Get the football shirts designed with the color of your choice, any designs that your child would like to have and even have all of the kids names put on them to show that they are a team.

The design of this started out as a plain long sleeve shirt with nothing on it at all. As time went by, colors were added, logos, names and even businesses started advertising on them. One of the easiest ways to get your own design is to go online and create it yourself. You can also find a store that specializes in this sort of thing and order it that way. The football shirt has come a long way in the way that people have them designed.

With a little bit of research, you will be able to find many different places that will be able to offer you different types of plans for your own design. You can take in a picture or email a picture of the specific logo or picture that you want to have put on the football shirt. Depending upon the size and the amount of colors that you have in your design will make a difference on the type of price that you get. You can even order a kit online so that you can design, create and make your very own right at home.

If you are a serious fan and want to chose a shirt to wear to the game but don’t want it to look like everyone else’s, you can design your own with a phrase or saying that will capture the spirit of the game and the team. This way you will stand out above all others and still have your very own football shirt to wear whenever you want to. You don’t have to look like everyone else while you are at the game. Stand out in a crowd and design your own or just do as a gift for a friend.
